How to become a Racing Trainee - Career Path

Students who have completed the Foundation Course, and who are assessed to be competent on all given topics and of good character, will be considered either for employment as Trainee Work Riders, Equestrian Assistants, or for further training as Trainee Apprentice Jockeys.

Racing Management Trainee

  • Attach to different racing departments to learn its operations and take up special projects through on and off the job training

Lead Horse Trainee

  • Accompany racehorses to the starting gate before the race begins
  • Accompany horses that are difficult to control
  • If a horse goes out of control, the lead horse will be sent out to bring it back

Lead Horse Rider

  • Accompany racehorses to the starting gate before the race begins
  • Accompany horses that are difficult to control
  • If a horse goes out of control, the lead horse will be sent out to bring it back
 

Apprentice Farrier

  • To be coached by senior farrier to enhance farriery knowledge and technical skills and attain professional qualification of being a competent Farrier

Farrier

  • Inspect four feet of all horses assigned daily, take remedial action on any significant findings
  • Perform daily forge work; and provide farriery services in race days
 

Veterinary Clinical Technician

  • Assist Veterinary Surgeons while performing routine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including anesthetic procedure
  • Maintain the normal operations of clinical equipment at Equine Hospital as well as prepare and sterilize surgical tools

Trainee Apprentice Jockey

  • Allocate to trainer and gain knowledge and skills in riding and stables management
  • Attend both academic & riding lessons
  • Strengthen race-riding skills & stables management through overseas training and to learn about other racing cultures

  • Allocate to trainer to gain expertise in riding and stables management
  • Gain hands on experience through riding track work, barrier trials and races

Work Rider Trainee

  • Attach to different stables to gain more hands-on experience in riding horses
  • help in the vet checks of racehorses and perform race-day duties

  • Ride track work (slow and fast work) and give horses a variety of exercise according to the trainer's instructions
  • Jump horses out of the starting stalls
  • Clean & groom horses

  • Assist the Assistant Trainer to ensure an efficient stables operations by performing stables management, horses care, stables routine and racedays operations

  • Organise track work activities in accordance with the trainer's instructions
  • Keep horses fitness in the best possible condition and prepare horses to win race
  • Manage stables operations and staff

Equestrian Assistant

  • Take care of equestrian horses
  • Maintain stables hygiene and all equipments in good condition
  • Assist in horse shows and other ad hoc projects at Riding Schools

Equestrian Riding Instructor

  • Instruct group, semi-private and private lessons of equestrian activities for all ages
  • Exercise and re-train horses
 

Training Stable Assistant

  • Horses cleaning & grooming at training stable; stables cleaning; cleanliness of all grooming kits, stables fitting and saddlery; and other duties as assigned by the superior
  • Assist in training lesson

Instructor Assistant

  • Assist the Instructor in teaching equine related theories and knowledge in lessons
  • Assist in managing stable operations and ensuring the safety of trainees and horses
