"When I studied environmental science and urban planning at university, I always dreamed of making Hong Kong a better place for everyone. I am grateful for the opportunity to develop my career at the Club, which its unique integrated business model allows us to serve the community and create social impact, especially during this challenging time.
Never stop enjoying and discovering meaning in what you do, and being inspired by people who you work with and work for. When you still carry a big smile after a long day, and you see other smiling faces around you, you know this is more than just a “job” that you are doing. It is a blessing that my passion is very much integrated with my career, and you will meet a lot of passionate people at the Club. This gives me a lot of drive and motivation every day. "
"No individual can win a game by himself/herself. In HKJC, there are different forms of collaboration between internal and external parties to make a project succeed.
During my 3-year rotations in the programme, I have participated in multiple projects which allowed me to grow personally and professionally. Mainly it is because I got the chance to work with different managers from a variety of fields throughout the 6 rotations in the Club and learn to view and evaluate the project from a broader perspective."
"The feeling of being empowered and trusted by different team members and managers throughout my 3-year Management Trainee journey has always motivated me to walk the extra mile and drive innovations to excel.
With that experience, I have always believed that empowering individuals is a critical part of team success. With more leadership roles and responsibilities that I am entitled to, I strive to become an empowered leader who is capable of inspiring, motivating and supporting team members."
“The Club provides full support for graduates as they pursue their aspirations under the purpose for the betterment of our society.
You are surrounded by talents and experienced leaders from all over the globe which provides a solid ground for us to sharpen our skills towards a professional career.”
"The Club has demonstrated a tremendous amount of agility amidst the pandemic.
We are encouraged to be comfortable with uncertainty and keep an open mind when identifying opportunities or solving issues. The ability to think one step ahead and anticipate, so as to provide recommendations that tackle different scenarios, is highly valued.
These are the qualities showcased by our colleagues when implementing and executing the Racing Bubble to ensure the horse racing operation is maintained (i.e. 'Horse racing will go on' / 「馬照跑」). "
"I always believe that 'A great way to invest in yourself is to keep learning throughout your life.'
As a keen learner who loves exploring new things and challenging myself, I take ownership of my professional development through self-learning. In the Club, Management Trainees have access to a lot of valuable learning opportunities and resources that help develop our competencies. This helps prepare us for the next step in our careers.
Apart from participating in tailor-made MT training, I have taken a diverse range of courses both internally and externally to enrich my business domain knowledge and increase my personal effectiveness. I also seek feedback from the team actively so that I can continuously improve my performance. My manager and teammates in each rotation are very generous in coaching, guiding and sharing their knowledge with me.
Be prepared to face a steep but rewarding learning curve here at the Club!"
"A proactive, or growth mindset, starts with realising we are not a product of our circumstances, but our decisions.
As a Management Trainee at the Club, I have never stopped acting in anticipation of future business needs or changes. This has opened many exciting doors for me to grow and contribute to the team's success. While change is the only constant, being proactive will surely bring us to the next level."
"Engagement is no buzzword in the Club. My manager-coaches always encourage me to design my learning path proactively and propose new ways of working – autonomy is given in your early stage of career.
More importantly, I am involved in challenging projects that have a concrete 'meaning' behind them. This includes creating a better customer experience, crafting a more engaging application journey and connecting young talent in the Club. This sense of serving always motivates me to put my heart into my work."
"The most valuable takeaway from the Management Trainee Programme is definitely the wide spectrum of projects I was involved in.
After spending a fruitful year in different departments, I have returned to my host division with unique insights from people I worked with. Their profound knowledge of the Club and the supportive attitude enabled me to contribute to tasks that I would not normally be able to.
For me, the key to developing insights is to be open-minded and accept new challenges."
"As a world-class Racing club and a responsible sports wagering operator, the Club’s unique integrated business model hinges on integrity, ultimately enabling it to be one of the world’s top ten charity donors. From our state-of-the-art Racing Laboratory to our specialised Security and Integrity department, we are led by leaders in the field and conduct our business in line with the highest industry standards.
This commitment to fairness and transparency has brought the Club an international reputation of uncompromising integrity. This instills confidence in customers, horse owners, trainers and jockeys, and ensuring the ongoing success of the Club’s operation. With integrity at the heart of everything we do, it is no surprise it is one of our core values!"
“I have always gravitated towards anything with an altruistic bent, and that’s how I knew the Club was the right place for me to develop my career.
I had a fruitful first year in Corporate Affairs learning about stakeholder management and strategic communication, and have been lucky enough to be involved in Club-initiated HKSAR 25th Anniversary celebratory projects. My current rotation in Racing Marketing is vastly different from my previous one, whether by work nature or dynamics. I see it as an opportunity for me to grow and challenge myself.
Every day I truly immerse myself in the work we do, and with every small action contributing to the Club’s unique integrated business model, I know I would bring about positive changes that impact the society."
“As a fresh graduate, it is easy to have a mindset of trying to impress and contribute as much as possible. However, it is equally important to stay humble and learn from your colleagues.
The art of ‘listening’ is an underrated trait to have. Being a skilled listener not only helps to build better workplace relationships, you’ll also be able to widen your perspectives and gain valuable insights from your peers.
Always treat people with respect and appreciation! I’m sure you’ll find it much easier to reach your goals with the connections you built in the workplace!”
“As a renowned organisation, the Club has gained its reputation for excellence by putting an innovative mentality at the core of the organisation.
My current rotation on the Club's new data center and the multiple ongoing large-scale technical projects have already proven the cutting-edge qualities of the Club. No matter it is for technical or non-technical projects, you will be inspired by all the innovative minds, ultimately leading you to be one of the future leaders in the Club. Hence, be bold in bringing in fresh ideas or initiatives to all the projects during your time at the Club.”
"I know I'm investing my time and energy into a company that contributes value to society. And vice versa, I believe the club is investing time and opportunity in me to become a future leader.
As a Management Trainee, I’ve been given different opportunities to discover and develop skills and knowledge in different areas. It is very important to keep pushing my limits and keep myself outside my comfort zone, in order to gain the most out of the program.
So far throughout my management trainee journey, having the curiosity to ask questions, the determination to grow and the courage to make mistakes are some key takeaways.”
"Working in HKJC, I’ll be able to meet and work with different stakeholders, from external vendors to internal business units.
Learning to be empathetic and stand in their shoes, to see through their eyes enables me to determine the best way to move forward in difficult situations. These experiences have greatly enhanced my decision making skills and improved my professional development."
"The Club operates with an integrated business model which serves its customers but also responds to the needs of society. I love to explore different opportunities to spur my growth and was specifically drawn to the Club. The comprehensive business functions of the Club offer unlimited opportunities for its employees to create an impact on the team and society. The Club values collaboration and provides flexible rotations to enhance our development.
Since joining the Club, I have had the chance to work and learn with people from diverse backgrounds. Currently, I am involved in analytical projects that would allow me to leverage my skills in a supportive environment.
As a Management Trainee at the Club, we are exposed to opportunities and challenges. Never enclose yourself in areas you are familiar with as the journey will be full of valuable assets for you to discover."
"Working with the Customer Strategy, Insights and Innovation Division is like stationing on a commercial battleship.
The sheer size of the division and dynamic nature of retail work mean that every task delegated to me is uniquely different and rewarding. During the rotation, my coaches and the Management Trainee Programme leads endeavour to provide me with maximum exposure and tailored guidance, while also encouraging me to take ownership of my professional development and to venture into unfamiliar work areas. To work in the Retail business is to provide top-notch customer-centric services through strategising, innovating and being smartly diligent.
How can you be bored when you are sailing across the never-settling seas?"
"In a time which challenges the world like no other, it is of particular importance for us to think deeply about what the community truly needs. By keeping abreast of the times, the Club never gets complacent about what has already been done and planned as we know societal needs constantly change.
As a Management Trainee, I am privileged to be in a team that is continually seeking for betterment in strategic planning and implementation, and thus offering better services to people in dire need."
"Prudence is the discipline of being inward-focused and forward-facing. While we may constantly work on assignments that are dynamic and fast-pacing, it is essential to think ahead by factoring in the considerations of different stakeholders to deliver the right messages and keep projects running.
I constantly remind myself to stay focused and keep reflecting on what I have been doing. I try to listen, consolidate information, and explore possible solutions. All these have given me reliable references to make sensible judgements. From turning an idea into realistic actions, prudence guides me to be more refined and targeted."
"Business is a matter of taking calculated risks. Business leaders need not only contingency plans, but also the courage to make bold decisions in the face of adversity. 'Courage' does not mean you are not frightened at all, but it shows that you are determined to overcome your inner fears.
Changes are difficult but inevitable, especially in times of pandemic. Although HKJC is a well-established organisation, we need to be courageous to make changes for the betterment of society. In an era of constant change, the Club has proven itself a world-class leader by launching speedy, targeted, and innovative initiatives.
Formulating corporate-wide strategic decisions for the Club is never easy – while understanding the Club’s unique and integrated business model is crucial, being vigilant and astute about the external business environment is even more so. However, there is no ever-perfect strategy, so never be afraid to speak up whenever an idea strikes you. Most importantly, have the courage to be uncomfortable and push your limits – you never know how much you can learn from the experience."
"With my past exposures, I have always framed striving for excellence as one of my top goals. Now, my first rotation in Tai Kwun offers me an excellent opportunity to explore the Club’s pursuit of excellence and the standards it upholds.
In order to deliver the highest quality experience to its visitors, everything presented to the public has to undergo a thorough planning and decision-making process. Being proactive, committing to new challenges, and constantly seeking improvements are all key attributes as a Management Trainee at HKJC.
The Club is always committed to providing the highest level of care, dedication, exposure, and expertise to equip us to achieve excellence. Therefore, the Management Trainee Programme is truly a precious opportunity for young graduates to learn, to grow, and to contribute."
"Connection is not just a brief encounter; it is a powerful tool that shapes our professional development.
My current role in Corporate Affairs, I am responsible for managing and engaging stakeholders. I see this as the process of weaving a tapestry of connections. By establishing these connections and sharing impactful stories about the Club, we effectively communicate its unique integrated business model and initiatives. Witnessing the positive impact of collective efforts by the Club and its partners brings me immense fulfillment.
"Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much." By fostering strong connections, the Club continuously adapts and acts for the betterment of society."
"As a first-year Management Trainee, I have had the privilege of experiencing the true essence of teamwork. Working alongside my team has been a truly wonderful experience filled with support and collaboration.
Together, we handle complex tasks, leveraging our collective expertise and problem-solving skills. Working at the Racing Talent Training Centre also constantly reminds me of the power of teamwork among trainees. They navigate through the learning journey, uplifting and supporting one another in their Racing career. Ultimately, it fosters a strong sense of belonging to the team and promotes shared growth.
Teamwork has undoubtedly been the key to our collective success, cultivating a vibrant and inspiring work environment."
"At the Club, collaboration is deeply embedded in the fabric of the Club and serves as the cornerstone of our achievements. By aligning our efforts and working together, we enhance our ability to think innovatively and maximise synergies across different departments to solve complex problems.
By recognising the strength that lies in collaboration, we can forge strong partnerships, deliver exceptional experiences to our stakeholders and amplify our impact on our community."
"Working in a diverse environment at the Club has provided both challenges and opportunities for learning. In my role, I've helped manage complex projects and worked with colleagues from various backgrounds and industries. Facing diverse perspectives could seem intimidating. However, maintaining an open and inclusive mindset is the key.
The Club fosters a culture where all people feel valued and respected. This allows everyone to contribute fully. Through initiatives like my rotation in Risk Management, I gained a broader outlook by engaging with leaders from various fields worldwide.
Ongoing self-reflection helps me best capitalise on diversity to continue advancing my skills and knowledge. An attitude of cultural curiosity and awareness strengthens both individuals and the Club."
"My journey as a Management Trainee at the Club began with organising a major international forum on philanthropy, "Philanthropy for Better Cities Forum". It was a daunting task, but our belief in the cause fueled our performance. I learned that true performance is about uniting diverse talents to achieve a shared goal, not personal glory.
Our dedicated teamwork and collaboration empowered us to achieve what once seemed impossible. This experience reinforced that through the Club's continued pursuit of outstanding performance, our contributions can act as a catalyst for meaningful progress in our community. The forum was just the beginning; as my journey continues at the Club, I am reminded that the impossible can become possible when hearts and minds unite for a greater good. I learned that, in the world of philanthropy and community development, our performance was a catalyst for positive change."
"Being eager to learn and having a hunger for knowledge is the key to growing professionally as a future leader.
During my rotation in International Racing and Regulation, I was offered opportunities to work with and learn from external horseracing authorities, whose goal is to continuously enhance the racing industry on a global level.I find it critical to visualise my goals with determination. When you pursue excellence, you can drive others too in creating synchrony to achieve ambitious goals.
“Riding High Together” - Being driven is what helps me continually develop and unleash my full potential."
