Empowering Youth Through Art

In celebration of The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s 140th anniversary, this series of community engagement initiatives brings young people together to create art inspired by Xu Beihong’s famous horse paintings.

Xu Beihong: A Pioneer of Chinese Art

Xu Beihong is a pioneering Chinese artist renowned for his traditional ink-and-wash paintings, which masterfully blend Chinese and Western art techniques.

As an innovative art educator with an international background, Xu Beihong emphasised live sketching and a modern curriculum which nurtured creativity.

Xu also actively promoted talent and organised many exhibitions to showcase Chinese art in cities such as Paris, Brussels, Milan, and Moscow.

Joining Forces with Simon Ma

To help deliver this initiative, the Club has partnered with celebrated Hong Kong contemporary artist Simon Ma. Ma has cited Xu as a major influence on his work, demonstrated through his own impactful depictions of horses.

Ma will guide children and students in creating new art pieces inspired by Xu’s famous horse paintings, which express the themes of vitality, perseverance and excellence.

A Showcase of Creativity

As a collective act of artistic expression, Simon Ma guided 30 students in painting 30 horse sculptures together.

‘Horse with You’ Competition and Exhibitions

The ‘Horse with You’ competition invites students from all schools across Hong Kong to showcase their creativity by submitting their personalised horse-themed artwork inspired by Xu Beihong.

The top 140 entries will be featured in exhibitions across key cities in Hong Kong and Mainland China, starting in January 2026 to celebrate the coming Year of the Horse.

A Committed Supporter of the Arts

The Club promotes arts and culture through its donations to iconic facilities like Tai Kwun and the Hong Kong Palace Museum, while also supporting long-standing programmes such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival and Le French May Arts Festival.
